Platte Institute Commentary on Safe Haven Fiasco

Nebraska "wiffed" on this one! The Safe Haven issue was coming at Nebraska like a slow-pitch softball heading for the middle of the strike zone. Forty-nine other states had already enacted safe haven laws, so the issue certainly wasn't a surprise to the Unicameral. Safe Haven Commentary

Stossel on The O’Reilly Factor: Free Market vs. Economic Bailout

By Roger LempkePlatte Institute Executive DirectorCLICK ON THIS LINK to watch John Stossel's interview with Bill O'Reilly of Fox News. Whether or not you agree with him about the current credit and economic situation, you must admit that Stossel does not mince words. Why do pundits have such abiding faith (his word) that added government involvement and oversight will resolve the current tight credit situation' How do we know "the bailout," which uses taxpayer dollars and drives the country deeper into debt, will actually stabilize the situation' Why shouldn't the government just "get out of the way" and let market forces work'

Report: Nebraska Football’s Impact on Your Wallet

With the start of the University of Nebraska football season drawing closer, the Platte Institute for Economic Research has released a report examining how the success of the Huskers on the football field correlates with some key economic factors in the state. The report, authored by Alek Blankenau, takes a look at how the success - or lack thereof - in football in the fall compares with changes in the per capita personal net earnings and the total full time and part time employment in the state the following calendar year. The findings show, on average, that the better the Big Red does, the better off you are the following year. You can read the full report by clicking on the link below.
